PALNYC in partnership with School Choice Solutions announces $20,000 in scholarship available for students with exceptional talents!

The 2015 Discover Your Passion Competition is now taking applications for the chance to win $5,000 in scholarship money and the September 16th deadline is fast approaching!

Does your child have a passion they would like to pursue further? Music? Soccer? Science? Drawing? Video Game Design? Debate? Entrepreneurship? If your child is in the 2nd to 8th grade and enrolled in a New York City school, then he or she is eligible showcase their passion in the third annual Michael Perelstein Memorial Scholarship Fund’s Discover Your Passion Competition.

The Discover Your Passion Competition encourages parents, students, teachers and schools to identify and showcase exemplary creativity, intellectual pursuits and talent of school children.

The $20,000 Scholarship Fund will be awarded to students who show exceptional promise in academic fields, sports, music, the arts, social entrepreneurship, technology or other disciplines. The competition also attempts to bring to the foreground the full range of what talent can be. Previous award winners have used their scholarship monies to pursue their passions in chess, music, fencing, entrepreneurship, dance and a range of other talents. 

Student Spotlight

Samantha Katel, pictured below, was the 2014 Grand Prize winner of the Discover Your Passion Competition. Samantha saw a need in the community of Manhattan Children’s Center, a school for children with autism where she volunteered as a peer buddy, and she proposed a way to fill this need when she applied for the Discover Your Passion competition in 2014. With her award of $5,000 Samantha has designed and hopes to prototype a unique therapy device for autistic children. More on the Competition

The Discover Your Passion Competition is open to students living within the five boroughs of New York City. Students can apply by submitting an application with parental consent, a sample of the work/passion they are showcasing, nomination letters and an explanation for how the award money will be used to further their passion. Judges will identify competition finalists and decide who will receive the grand prize of (1) $5000 scholarship and which finalists will receive the remaining three (3) $3,500 and three (3) $1,500 scholarship awards. Click here for more information on Criteria, Eligibility and the Submission Process.

All applications must be submitted online by Wednesday, September 16, 2015.  The winners will be presented, and have their works on display, at the 2016 NYC Gifted & Talented Symposium & Benefit on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at New York Law School.
