Dr. Brown will share insights on How to Harness A Child’s Passions and Strengths, prior to an exemplary display of NYC’s talented youth and recipients of this year’s $25,000 Perelstein DISCOVER YOUR PASSION Competition Awards, a joint program of PALNYC and School Search Solutions.

About Dr. Elissa Brown
Dr. Brown, the director of the Hunter College Center for Gifted Studies and Education and program coordinator of Hunter’s Advanced Certificate Program in Gifted Education, is an education policy fellow under the Institute for Educational Leadership. Before joining Hunter, she was the North Carolina state director of gifted education and teacher preparation programs. Dr. Brown was the former director of the Center for Gifted Education at the College of William & Mary from 2002-2007. She has been a district gifted-program coordinator, the principal of a specialized high school, and a classroom teacher. She has served as an adjunct professor at several universities, including Rutgers and Duke University. She is a published author in the field of gifted education and presents widely. She is the parent of three children and lives in East Harlem, NY.
About The Competition.
The Michael Perelstein Memorial Scholarship Fund’s Discover Your Passion™ Competition encourages parents, students, teachers and schools to identify and showcase exemplary creativity, intellectual pursuits and talent of school children. The competition also attempts to bring to the foreground the full range of what talent can be – from the academically advanced “how does it work?” student to the kid who loves animals and has the potential to harness that passion to be the next Temple Grandin or Jane Goodall.
The Discover Your Passion™ Competition offers New York City-based students an opportunity to explore their unique gifts, talents and passions in an area of their choice. In 2016 the $25,000 Scholarship Fund is awarded to up to ten children who show exceptional promise in academic fields, sports, music, the arts, social entrepreneurship, technology or other disciplines. Formerly only available to students in grades 2-8, the program has now been extended through High School. The Grand Prize Winner will receive $5000 toward the pursuit of his or her choice and the remaining winners will be awarded amounts consistent with their projects. Finalists will be selected within three categories: Grades 2-5, 6-8 and 9-12.
